Miss Gladys Beeby attended her sister
as bridesmaid and Mr. W. Bainbridge,
jun., was best man.
The honeymoon was spent in Sydney.

144 (Bekende Voortrekkerleier) is op 12.11.1780 op die plaas "Soetendal",distrik Wellington, gebore. Toe hy 3 jaar oud was, het sy vaderverhuis na "Welvanpas", vroe‘r genoem "de Krakeelhoek", 'n plaas wattot vandag toe nog in hande van die Retiefs is en tans bewoon worddeur mnr Dan Retief (sien bl. 157-h4) vir sy besonderhede. Saam met syvier broers en ses susters het hy seker van die beste onderwys genietwat destyds moontlik was. Hy het 'n mooi handskrif ontwikkel en was 'ngoeie spreker. Piet het sy vader bygestaan op sy plaas tot sy 27stejaar, waarna hy op "Kromme Rhee" by Stellenbosch gaan boer. In 1812word hy benoem as 'n kommandant onder lt. kol. Graham om na dieOosgrens te vertrek om daar patrolliediens te verrig. Hier op dieOosgrens verrys 'n nuwe gesigseinder vir hom, naamlik die moontlikheidvan landbou, veeteelt en handel. Hy vertrek in 1813 van Stellenboschna Uitenhage. Hy het die jong weduwee Magdalena Johanna Greyling op syeerste tog na die Oosgrens ontmoet, waarna hulle besluit om in diehuwelik te tree. Die huwelik vind plaas op 2.7.1814. Haar man Johan C.Greyling is op die Oosgrens deur die Kaffers op 31.12.1811 vermoor. Syself is in 1782 gebore, 'n dogter van Pieter de Wet en MariaPetronella Opperman. Retief het vooruitgeboer en verskeie plase enerwe in Port-Elizabeth verkry. Een van sy plase waar hy 'n tydlankgeboer het was "Mooimeisiesfontein" naby Riebeeck-Oos. Theal het hombeskrywe as een van die welvarendste manne in die distrik Albanie enoo keen van die mees regskapenes. Hier het hy ook kragtigeleierseienskappe openbaar. Ons weet ook dat sy huwelik met Magdalena'besonder gelukkige een was. Dit sou egter haar lot wees om albei haarmans en 3 seuns, nl. 01 en Abraham Greyling, en die jong Pieta an diedood af te gee, almal deur die inboorlinge vermoor. Piet Retief en syhet 4 kinders gehad nl. Deborah Jacoba (geb. 1815); Jacobus Francois(geb. 1816) wat laat getroud is en geen afstammelinge nagelaat hetnie; Magdalen Margaretha (geb. 1820) en Pieter Cornelis (geb. 1823),wat saam met sy vader vermoor is. Daar is dus geen manlikeafstammeling van die Voortrekkerleier wat die van "Retief" dra nie.Retief vaardig sy beroemde Manifes Jan. 1837 uit, en besluit om tetrek. Hy kom in April 1837 by die Vetrivier aan waar daar grootonenigheid tussen die verskillende groepe Trekkers onder hulle leiersPotgieter en Maritz heers. Retief word egter op 'n volksvergadering op17 April 1837 as goewerneur en komdt.-genl. Gekies en almal aanvaarhom as leier. Hier tree sy leierseienskappe weer eens na vore. Hy wordegterop 6.2.1838 deur Dingaan vermoor. Dit kan gesŽ word dat PietRetief waarskynlik die eerste Afrikanerleier was. 146 (RETIEF oorspronklik gespel as RŽtif) Daar het 'n bloedige vervolgingvan die Prostestante in Frankryk plaasgevind na die herroeping van dieEdik van Nantes, op 18 Oktober 1685. Dit was in hierdie tyd datFrancois en sy suster Anna vir hulle lewe gevlug het na Holland. DieHollanders het destyds immigrante vir die Kaap gesoek. Francois en sysuster het besluit om na die Kaap te kom. Hulle arriveer in 1688. Hyverkry 'n plasie "La Paris", 60 morge groot, taamlik afgesonderd, aandie noordelike kant van die Bergrivier in die rigting van Wemmershoek.
Francois se suster Anna is met Pierre ROUSSEAU, stamvader van dieRousseau's in ons land, getroud en hulle kry 'n plasie "L'Arcd'Orleans" langs diŽ van Francois Retief . (Sien kaart.)
Die eerste paar jaar aan die Kaap was veelbewo‘. Francois en sy vrouis een nag in hulle huis aangeval deur 'n rondloper, 'n sekere Daniel,waartydens hulle verskeie meswonde opgedoen het. Hiervan het hullegelukkig volkome herstel.
Francois en Maria het 9 kinders gehad. Die oudste is met PieterROUSSEAU getroud, die tweede met Pieter HUGO, en die derde isongetroud oorlede. Die vierde, Francois Retief, het die stamvader vandie Graaff-Reinet-tak, die Tulbagh Lichtenburg-tak, Wellington- ensommige van die Paarl Retiefs geword. Die vyfde, 'n seun, Pierre, isjonk oorlede. Die sesde kind, nl. Paulus, was die stamvader van meestevan die Paarl Retiefs. Van die sewende, weer 'n Pierre, weet ons baiemin. Die agste, Hester, is getroud met Jacques MARAIS, wie se oupa diestamvader van die Marais in ons land is. Die negende, 'n dogter,Magdalena, is met Tieleman ROOS' getroud, 'n seun van een van diestamvaders van die Roose in Suid-Afrika

In the 12th month 1788 my Uncle William Beeby was married in friends meeting-house at Beckfoot to Mary Porthouse, who had not been brought up a friend, but had attended meetings for some time and been admitted a member. Previous [sic] to marrage she has had five children viz Rachel, Jane, Nicholas and William the two last died in the twelfth month 1789 within a week of each other after which they had another son born in the year 1800 named Nicholas.
